Otolaryngology

Otolaryngology is the branch of medicine specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of ear, nose, throat, head and neck disorders. Practitioners are called otolaryngologists or ear nose and throat (ENT) surgeons.

ENTs are medical doctors who complete at least five years of surgical residency training (one year in general surgery, four years in ENT surgery). Some ENTs also pursue sub-specialty fellowships which are usually one or two years in duration.

EAR NOSE AND THROAT (ENT)

Three Musketeers

The ear, nose and throat (ENT) are closely interrelated and are treated together as a medical speciality. Otolaryngology, or ENT, specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of the ear, nose, throat and head and neck disorders. Practitioners, commonly known as otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons, complete five years of surgical residency training – one year in general surgical training and four years in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

Seeking Treatment

If you are unsure of why there is a strange lump or appearance on your head or neck, it is time to consult an otolaryngologist. An otolaryngologist is trained in both the medical and surgical treatment of hearing loss, balance disorders as well as other common complaints such as chronic sinusitis, which is the inflammation of cavities around the nasal passages. Otolaryngologists also perform plastic surgery on the head and neck and treat cancers of the head and neck, such as thyroid cancer.
